Well, I'm back! I've been so busy with t-shirt quilts and granddaughters 💕 that I haven't really given it much of a thought.<div><br /></div><div>BUT LATELY....I've re-discovered string quilts. Over the 30ish years I've made t-shirt quilts....almost always with a solid fabric...I've accumulated an <i>overabundance</i> of smallish and odd-shaped scraps. NO WAY would I discard these fabrics. Kona solids are the best...and not cheap...quilting fabrics. My recent quilt 'THAT'S A SOLID YES' focuses on those solids! My first ever quilt made with only Kona solids (front and back!).</div><div><br /></div><div>Old phone books are a necessity for me to make string quilts. Recycle when you can, right? </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiPUuDo2yd6w7uJmdRqVLGmAPSP6k_8ziR3NRu-HzE31ERaevcE9_ZQojVdekE_MEiDHy7sVot-MVAA5NEA4X2e_hzrA1rBHOuzaEYVEmKR3mwzaHzKiey2QmbzQd8iYKDHihY8yXgyDrTrc4K9Bpc_ZlnybdULAhMQAzAim74Txwuauhv1BJ0H8esDg/s640/67373486921__65B5473A-7CE6-430E-874E-95AFFA86C495.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiPUuDo2yd6w7uJmdRqVLGmAPSP6k_8ziR3NRu-HzE31ERaevcE9_ZQojVdekE_MEiDHy7sVot-MVAA5NEA4X2e_hzrA1rBHOuzaEYVEmKR3mwzaHzKiey2QmbzQd8iYKDHihY8yXgyDrTrc4K9Bpc_ZlnybdULAhMQAzAim74Txwuauhv1BJ0H8esDg/s320/67373486921__65B5473A-7CE6-430E-874E-95AFFA86C495.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><div><br /></div>I cut my phone book backings 5-1/4" x the height of the phone book. Bonnie Hunter @quiltville_Bonnie was (and still is) the guru of scrap quilting. I bought her book: <i>Scraps & Shirttails: Reuse, Re-purpose, Recycle! The Art of "Quilting Green"</i></span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">(Image borrowed from Amazon) </span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoalnmiDtXCSAsg28gXhRXlY5kINUFP8yfl1D3GBUHwsMzhi037FEnbtEo8b1FOgJ5UoHYqqwdbOXTVf5p7MG_KBjmT2345EkrQcIbg6TFVN2yTnkxGIO5nT_BOzgAtzsCnHfTNw4p5Yk9/s499/Scraps+and+Shirttails.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="386" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoalnmiDtXCSAsg28gXhRXlY5kINUFP8yfl1D3GBUHwsMzhi037FEnbtEo8b1FOgJ5UoHYqqwdbOXTVf5p7MG_KBjmT2345EkrQcIbg6TFVN2yTnkxGIO5nT_BOzgAtzsCnHfTNw4p5Yk9/s320/Scraps+and+Shirttails.jpg" /></a></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span><p><span style="font-size: medium;">From this book and the follow-up, <i>Scraps & Shirttails II: Continuing the Art of Quilting Green</i>, I learned how beautiful mens' shirts can be! There is a lot of fabric in a XXL shirt and the colors and combinations are endless. My fabric stash up to that time was mostly Kona Solids and a few fat quarters I had picked up at various quilt shops. Thanks to thrift stores, rummage sales, church sales and even a few estate sales, I built my shirt collection up to the point that almost all of my fun quilts (quilts for myself) had a variety of shirt fabrics in them. </span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">A typical $10 - $15 purchase:</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDGp8EC07k_HTKivmkPHFgmWgYfR3DnMbORNtPeUecAPSoor8tuKV9r-hsEuHPFeBdiJbcXM4-bgxCcJLfbXGCHvcYxHxoHGWlzZG9YgWLo-ndPT-gvFAeJ9eiAvO56jRZq1kXJNjRbpUE/s1284/IMG_0927.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1021" data-original-width="1284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDGp8EC07k_HTKivmkPHFgmWgYfR3DnMbORNtPeUecAPSoor8tuKV9r-hsEuHPFeBdiJbcXM4-bgxCcJLfbXGCHvcYxHxoHGWlzZG9YgWLo-ndPT-gvFAeJ9eiAvO56jRZq1kXJNjRbpUE/s320/IMG_0927.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Just out of the bag</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEienjT0I2vuKwCFi5sVzEz1cUQGGtU8H_lFciG_xEAaGE_qLEpFvzhleVjSIu3-AVgFLmvd8F-JBN9erryQEvYE-dpWF5kwKvJ9MwvoY9n5f8rlijbYiarEVur9O7ELN-9nV9gD9jXR0PpR/s1284/IMG_0928.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1036" data-original-width="1284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEienjT0I2vuKwCFi5sVzEz1cUQGGtU8H_lFciG_xEAaGE_qLEpFvzhleVjSIu3-AVgFLmvd8F-JBN9erryQEvYE-dpWF5kwKvJ9MwvoY9n5f8rlijbYiarEVur9O7ELN-9nV9gD9jXR0PpR/s320/IMG_0928.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Deboned and folded</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdnK5U6_p87suty8Bshjg3frn6Oyg70kRvNQ2qXGa6XLHXTtpv5yZtTb5xlFBi0Ca9XXwUSGTnNySLoU-XeUIc54sG-8NzxFqiHmrVVMfo1mv-mJougMJl4tSqdBHfScMKfTQfpQNjO00q/s1284/IMG_0929.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1029" data-original-width="1284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdnK5U6_p87suty8Bshjg3frn6Oyg70kRvNQ2qXGa6XLHXTtpv5yZtTb5xlFBi0Ca9XXwUSGTnNySLoU-XeUIc54sG-8NzxFqiHmrVVMfo1mv-mJougMJl4tSqdBHfScMKfTQfpQNjO00q/s320/IMG_0929.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Ready for the stash!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Notice the awesome color variety in these cotton shirts :)</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I recently finished a quilt I call "nacho daddy's quilt" which is made entirely from plaid shirts. I decided to change it up a bit, and I'm glad I did.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFnsZb4JPCQgH8rpV7UUpjWEq0Ewq8T8l-grierlK2agT5E0SS1t-rQ1C7-jo9js4P-_DLB5VJAe3-Clj1x0gjicRGn1yJz56KnIU7-U2LRuYMlxmfaeSfjQ92iOFQt4gWJQlT_aO7JSA6/s2821/IMG_0317.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2821" data-original-width="2522" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFnsZb4JPCQgH8rpV7UUpjWEq0Ewq8T8l-grierlK2agT5E0SS1t-rQ1C7-jo9js4P-_DLB5VJAe3-Clj1x0gjicRGn1yJz56KnIU7-U2LRuYMlxmfaeSfjQ92iOFQt4gWJQlT_aO7JSA6/s320/IMG_0317.jpeg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">A double border of half-square triangles add just the right amount of pizzazz! But alas! I have a fun quilt to talk about. For a long time now, I've been doing leaders and enders - you know, those little pieces you shove through the machine when you finish your main project. I made a nice stash of 9 patch squares that were beginning to collect dust. It was time!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMH-ofY40cF9Mg-sV5vLMBzofxBHvC7-zSQkY1gBrhwX9wNPeBJm39YUt69GTnTAGep37P1nJcGYcEU2P_T7mBwV6HS-MRfURCWGEAeC0Vn7wQ2fK6eVYZ1Zek0QMqtJSqZAydkQO19F4b/s1600/IMG_0494.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMH-ofY40cF9Mg-sV5vLMBzofxBHvC7-zSQkY1gBrhwX9wNPeBJm39YUt69GTnTAGep37P1nJcGYcEU2P_T7mBwV6HS-MRfURCWGEAeC0Vn7wQ2fK6eVYZ1Zek0QMqtJSqZAydkQO19F4b/s320/IMG_0494.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some time ago, I needed this soft brown fabric for a client's quilt. For some reason I felt the need to buy the bolt. WHY, I don't know! So, here I am making good use of brown. It's not my favorite color, but I think I can make this work. I've seen similar designs, however I didn't follow a pattern. First I made my 9 patches into diamonds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKM3x0tczvpLk4_OYopF8jy_qn7j4u_dhyphenhyphenLehMQVDjW4L3bjfBWpQ2zK6BiQNj55EA0D6KZD_YqzH2QkXt9J84_DlxIsJRg6li-UmiLNeZLv7fs7nC9u4V1tHH-Q3udAiUKnwg3ewOE814/s1600/IMG_0498.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKM3x0tczvpLk4_OYopF8jy_qn7j4u_dhyphenhyphenLehMQVDjW4L3bjfBWpQ2zK6BiQNj55EA0D6KZD_YqzH2QkXt9J84_DlxIsJRg6li-UmiLNeZLv7fs7nC9u4V1tHH-Q3udAiUKnwg3ewOE814/s400/IMG_0498.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used scrappy neutral sashing and scrappy 2" blocks as cornerstones. Scrappy makes me happy. Each square will finish at 6.5" and it has 64 squares. It's exactly that size. I don't do math. As far as size goes...does every quilt have to be a queen size or king size? Nah. It is whatever. Webbing makes construction easy, so this pic shows the quilt in that stage.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once I started this beauty, I didn't want to put it aside until the top was finished. I have my @quiltville_bonnie #frolicmysteryquilt to put together and I can only have so much going on at once. My workroom has an 8' x 8' work table, which I love. It's easy to have too much going on so I must stay focused. Yes. Now. What was I saying. OH yes. Focus.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWqMzYMArH4ENJNePwJ3CT5_PzGgR0JKdmLWRZUF7LfGBh6kuLLi_BrTB4kr6GPJlvlftR8GmzVO6OR4L57m9mgaKZo7T2U2HcZTmpY2VkJFA0YdExxpFOrxBdssMW5qCAxK4u3sawuu3X/s1600/IMG_0500.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWqMzYMArH4ENJNePwJ3CT5_PzGgR0JKdmLWRZUF7LfGBh6kuLLi_BrTB4kr6GPJlvlftR8GmzVO6OR4L57m9mgaKZo7T2U2HcZTmpY2VkJFA0YdExxpFOrxBdssMW5qCAxK4u3sawuu3X/s400/IMG_0500.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Looking good! I'm so excited that the brown isn't overtaking the quilt. Those scrappy neutrals are making me happy! It still needs some borders though....tomorrow.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tomorrow is now yesterday (huh??) and there it is, a sawtooth inner border and a 3" mitered corner order border. I'm totally self-taught, and mitering was trial and error and some math (ewww) and logic. It worked!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oh, the threads are in need of snipping but the quilt is pretty nice. If it's not obvious, I'm pretty excited about this quilt. It's just a top at this point, but I'll post a pic of the finished quilt soon. I see couch snuggles in the near future.</div>

Bedford is a quaint little town, full of history and uniqueness. It is home to my favorite guilty pleasure "The Penguin" an old-fashioned walk-up ice cream shop with the BEST #moosetracks ice cream ever.<br />
<br />
But to get to the point...quilting! I took two workshops, the first was "Serpentine Web", a fun twist on a spiderweb block. I haven't worked on this one since I've been back home, but I'll get to it. It sits on top (but last in line) of my UFO pile! Photos of that one coming soon.<br />

<br />
Second day class was to learn all about Narragansett Blues, a quilt I've had on my bucket list for awhile. It can be found in her book "More Adventures with Leaders and Enders". I seem to accumulate a LOT of blue fabrics, a good lot from recycled mens' shirts, and after seeing how Bonnie's quilt was featuring all those blues, I went with her theme.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Squares and rectangles in long strips. So many shades of blue and so many random 4-patches! At my table, Lauren and Dallas and I swapped some blues rectangles to give even more scrappy happy to our quilts.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Leftover piano key borders, 4 patches, 9 patches, orphan blocks, blah yardage and random recycled shirt pieces make the back of the quilt scrappy and fun. It's not a prize-winner (I've never entered, never will) but it's finished and I love it. Hats off to you, once again @quiltville_bonnie, for your never-ending encouragement and for sharing your talents with us.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Bonnie Hunter's diamond tile block was featured in the May/June 2018 issue of Quiltmaker's magazine. I never bought the magazine - instead I designed a larger version of her block. I have Electric Quilt (EQ) 8, an amazing software program for quilt design.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This is the design I came up with, the squares finishing at 10" in the quilt. I love the randomness of color. It was fun "shopping" in the bins for so many color combinations.</span><span style="font-size: large;"> </span><br />

I looked at it and thought "meh"....nothing special here...just trying to use up my overflowing stash of 2" squares and 2" strips.<br />

It's ok. nothing to write home about. SO instead of starting YET ANOTHER quilt that would soon turn into a UFO (quilting term - unfinished object), I decided to quilt and bind it and use it as a snuggle quilt for tv time. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This quilt has no pattern - it's just a bunch of 5" squares and 5" 9-patch blocks with a 6" piano key border. I quilted it with "Pipeline" from #UrbanElementz. The binding was sewn on by machine. I do not do hand-sewn binding because I've mastered machine sewing them!!! hahaha...ok, but seriously, the back stitching of the binding looks just like the front and because I will NEVER enter my quilts in a quilt show or any competition, I say screw it. Why hand-sew when I have a sewing machine (or 10)?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I threw it in the washer with a color-catcher and it came out of the dryer soft and squishy and comfy and everything a quilt should be.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
EIGHT more UFO's in the pile....and what did I do tonight? I started another quilt. shhhhhh.....</div>

Here's to hoping I remember how. So much has happened since my last blog post....first the bad. I lost my mom at 92 years old in March of this year. She had been living with dementia and it was really sad to see the rapid decline in memory (and general health) the last year of her life. She taught me how to thread a needle, and the rest is history.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRbf83IPXju1NF8k1pvaCd0n51SoZP9jAOnLQOgzhqcTeGpZLPQ35KHfeJb4kVUD0uKef7u93Q0_28fBHpnN_G06A8sGJSIUmNQLX_IJgkv4pg5P_YzL2wF-UIchXbIJNR3J4S0I2JdlOE/s1600/High+School+Photo+Dort.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRbf83IPXju1NF8k1pvaCd0n51SoZP9jAOnLQOgzhqcTeGpZLPQ35KHfeJb4kVUD0uKef7u93Q0_28fBHpnN_G06A8sGJSIUmNQLX_IJgkv4pg5P_YzL2wF-UIchXbIJNR3J4S0I2JdlOE/s320/High+School+Photo+Dort.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Then...the good! I'm a grandma (Gigi) again! I have two new granddaughters...Saylor Ann was born in September 2106 to my son and daughter-in-law and she joins her sister Demi Mae and brother Cole. June Elise was born in April 2017 to my daughter and daughter-in-law and joins her big sister Eleanor.<br />

I never thought I would enjoy being a grandparent as much as I do! Ok, that's a fib...I knew I would love it. There's just something about holding your babies' babies....it helps soften the blow of getting old.<br />
<br />
<br />
More quilts to come...I have been so busy with graduation quilts that poor little June still doesn't have her very own quilt yet! I can't wait to start the scrappy quilts again but the t-shirt quilts are the priority right now.<br />

Chopped blocks! This is such an easy quilt to make. I needed a quick baby shower gift last weekend so I dug into my stash and charm packs (5" pre-cut squares) and came up with a eye-pleasing quilt for baby Natalie. <br />

The back of the quilt - <br />
<br />
Whatever quilt I'm working on, I make extra blocks. I have an overflowing drawer of "orphan" blocks. There are 3 extra blocks across the back of Natalie's quilt.<br />
<br />
The square is the beginning of the design. It is cut in half and then cut in half again (or should I say "chopped"?) and 1/4 blocks are swapped with other 1/4 blocks and voila! Easy peasy lemon squeezee.<br />

I guess if you love the brand, love the shirts, love the quilts, why not? Because she had (has?) such an enormous collection that her dresser was overflowing, she turns to me to transform them. There are studs and "diamonds" on her shirts, so it is a bit of a challenge. I love a challenge, and I love these shirts!<br />

The pressure is on to get those quilts to the graduates in time for their special day. Now and then, a mom or dad will admit that the quilt is more for themselves than for the graduate. Of course! I remember making my daughter's quilt as she graduated from Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin. Four years of volleyball and softball were four of the most exciting years of my life (too)!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0VXp3ZIjqaVLdFEIRVFz80KclEWMeY7e9gsq03BDRqQxUEg7xKB6MPpOI01CBD_aOv1dk-VTTXZF_vdFaVNm1C1j9qwYLZh2DnARuvHnXpOR-jO_WFkDoA0vSr3QK5qzyHmPaVe3ChAMK/s1600/Katy+and+her+quilt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="325" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0VXp3ZIjqaVLdFEIRVFz80KclEWMeY7e9gsq03BDRqQxUEg7xKB6MPpOI01CBD_aOv1dk-VTTXZF_vdFaVNm1C1j9qwYLZh2DnARuvHnXpOR-jO_WFkDoA0vSr3QK5qzyHmPaVe3ChAMK/s400/Katy+and+her+quilt.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Even this mom got a little sentimental as I cut these shirts. Every one had been through the laundry so many times! I remembered her wearing them. I just had to tell myself that this was preserving these precious memories. The alternative? Rags...Goodwill....or shirts hidden in a drawer for years.<br />
<br />
Hers was a unique quilt, as it was a 2-sided machine quilted quilt. I've made only a dozen or so over my quilting career. Above is the volleyball side...and below, the softball side.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Addy had a big party, lots of people - a really fun reunion of family and friends.<br />
<br />
One of the restrictions of the gift-giving was a $4.00 limit. $4.00! That's tough. I was determined to give her a wonderful gift for just that, or less (only to find out at the party that almost everyone broke that rule!).<br />
<br />
Addy's mom and one of my daughters were inseparable as kids, so naturally, this kid is pretty special to me and my family. As many little tykes do, her mommy carried around a security blanket "Mr. Frog" and an accompanying "Mr. Frog" pillow. While her mommy never really did let go of the blanket, I had possession of the Mr. Frog pillow in hopes that someday I could make something special. Mission Accomplished!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihjxEmGKx74ZW21sz9bsn0ocv0RWCqt4s42S5x-Vrr5QuVMDe63hZg_fkFocq3dz4uRQJkg0hu4jbRTyAPOTUB2GkVkfnUodcgEniKKnx73nLfY3OXfUuLUTmoFk6ZYSCcDeN9tS1jYv5R/s1600/addyquilt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihjxEmGKx74ZW21sz9bsn0ocv0RWCqt4s42S5x-Vrr5QuVMDe63hZg_fkFocq3dz4uRQJkg0hu4jbRTyAPOTUB2GkVkfnUodcgEniKKnx73nLfY3OXfUuLUTmoFk6ZYSCcDeN9tS1jYv5R/s320/addyquilt.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Mr. Frog is sitting right in the middle and the quilt evolved around him. The pile of 4-squares in my "use me!" pile was begging to be displayed around Mr. Frog, along with a few 8" sampler squares. This is a super scrappy quilt - every piece is from my stash. Heck, I even pieced the batting pieces together.<br />
<br />
I love to shop at thrift stores for great deals on shirts and scrubs. Picky as I may be, I can find some amazing deals on XL and XXL cotton shirts, which provide a LOT of fabric to feed my hungry stash. High-quality, beautiful fabrics can be found in the most unlikely places! Many of the colorful squares in the quilt are bits and pieces of colorful scrubs. Whodathunkit? Even the binding is a fun scrub fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTI87WJf0ZIzT54M4D2vnR4X02Mud5iplluug_lVEt5s-sbt0RpeWTU47niXaYgup6Kkg6JURYRKaQ-lUC6E68H4mXsGEjDHF1HG6KcaJFdfbjylUss4yL4wOvOVztH2JAUfBBGZ3O0eXm/s1600/addyquiltcorner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTI87WJf0ZIzT54M4D2vnR4X02Mud5iplluug_lVEt5s-sbt0RpeWTU47niXaYgup6Kkg6JURYRKaQ-lUC6E68H4mXsGEjDHF1HG6KcaJFdfbjylUss4yL4wOvOVztH2JAUfBBGZ3O0eXm/s200/addyquiltcorner.jpg" width="150" /></a></div>
<br />
There in each corner is a bit of sunshine, a snowman, a Christmas tree, or a shimmering cloud. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs3wr7I0VJkzXcKgG7xhXUJj9NnDJInvwm62V7lrMdO7od0HDBUutP96ntNmgoTZjKrE0Vkb3xeX_hMHpZ596q8ornM-fYi6BHUuSFGHakfSlu8xm0YQ-R56f4ESVSQJdEOKpb2NtBtN4V/s1600/heartsloops.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs3wr7I0VJkzXcKgG7xhXUJj9NnDJInvwm62V7lrMdO7od0HDBUutP96ntNmgoTZjKrE0Vkb3xeX_hMHpZ596q8ornM-fYi6BHUuSFGHakfSlu8xm0YQ-R56f4ESVSQJdEOKpb2NtBtN4V/s320/heartsloops.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The quilting was done with a free style loops and hearts design which is simple and appropriate. All in a day's work. <br />

I love making quilts for my clients - t-shirt quilts and memory quilts of all kinds. Each one tells a story - a unique story - and I am honored to help preserve those memories!<br />
<br />
Would you believe that until today I have never made a quilt for myself? Nope. Never. BUT HERE IT IS! Thanks to Bonnie Hunter <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">http://quiltville.blogspot.com</a>. She has inspired me to expand my talents and create art I never dreamed of. I am so excited about this quilt :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv_SG74-3tbqAvIlExiFXnTVQZSg4nnL4m_0T0Ny76gDvlhOpfrmxDIcy0IhkwCwoLdfipRYk3nbS7Y_pWgx-HWhEXsytQRZMLKAQiN9Lhs_hal0GJ4L5HADetcEuFUt6WcSX3BDPxKmju/s1600/IMG_0820.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv_SG74-3tbqAvIlExiFXnTVQZSg4nnL4m_0T0Ny76gDvlhOpfrmxDIcy0IhkwCwoLdfipRYk3nbS7Y_pWgx-HWhEXsytQRZMLKAQiN9Lhs_hal0GJ4L5HADetcEuFUt6WcSX3BDPxKmju/s400/IMG_0820.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is my variation of one of Bonnie's free patterns, Scrappy Mountain Majesty. You can find it here: <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/free-patterns.html">http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/free-patterns.html</a> I put it on the bed in the guestroom last night and I was so excited! This quilt is totally scrappy. I would estimate 90% of what you're seeing are half-price mens shirts from Goodwill. I am frugal, I admit...but <i>look! </i>I also believe in recycling and repurposing, and what a fun way to do it.<br />
<br />

This is a queen size quilt with medium weight batting - good for all seasons. I quilted it on my long-arm with a "loops and leaves" free motion design.<br />

<br />
<br />
Cheryl was a nurse and these were her scrubs...44 of them. Sadly, she passed away and her husband requested a king-sized quilt from her wonderful, colorful collection. With purple (her favorite color) sashing and backing, piano key border, and four-square corners, this quilt turned out beautifully.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfL9V_jLQ3KnBTNtqCLjjC68qPbbRF7BhwqIABtoLPlD1XVAo1azpBvPPzXgYjdHdA_kz_dDMoHf-r_Q5X_8yinG-xc84Azpbqf3GS2IgcjMhwYCOYCk2N2l7oFKxtl3Y0zwhJGp8eyvRY/s1600/rstyve_1_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfL9V_jLQ3KnBTNtqCLjjC68qPbbRF7BhwqIABtoLPlD1XVAo1azpBvPPzXgYjdHdA_kz_dDMoHf-r_Q5X_8yinG-xc84Azpbqf3GS2IgcjMhwYCOYCk2N2l7oFKxtl3Y0zwhJGp8eyvRY/s320/rstyve_1_5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This quilt measures 105" x 91". My work table is 96" x 96", making it really hard to get a decent picture of the whole quilt. <br />

One of the quilts was almost entirely Beatles' shirts, and little did I know at that time that I would see this quilt twice again!<br />
<br />
It started out as a unique twin-size quilt, with some randomness to it. After two separate add-ons, here's the final quilt! It's so big I can't fit the whole picture in the picture.<br />

Martha is a wonderful lady, and as much as I like her, I hope this is the last add-on! I'm not sure my studio is big enough for a bigger quilt. But...she keeps finding more shirts!!<br />

It pained me to cut up her beautiful clothing - Ralph Lauren, Talbot's, Claiborne, and so on...including some magnificent silks, wools, and cashmeres. However, she requested 5 quilts from the beautiful clothing for her family. The first one is done and her grandmother loves it. I can only imagine the emotions she felt opening her quilt made from her own daughter's clothing. The backing is soft Navy flannel.<br />
<br />
Grandma is very ill and I'm so glad to have finished this quilt for her to enjoy it. Thank you, Lesley, for this opportunity.<br />

Lately, my business has evolved from a t-shirt quilt business to include memory quilts. Memories come in many forms: t-shirts, blouses, skirts, scarfs, jackets, and the list goes one. While I'm not making quilts at the rate I was 5, 10 years ago, I find myself consumed in creativity with the memory quilts and I love the diversion!<br />

She is retired and not overly computer savvy, so she is one of just a handful of customers who prefer to do business over the phone. When I get a call from Atlanta, I know it's Jane! Many years ago, she sent me her first quilt order - the t-shirts were all about her beloved Norwegian Elkhounds. She and her husband were also HUGE Florida Gator fans...and over the years and since he has passed away I made eight more quilts (mostly Gator) for her grandkids, kids, and herself. Today I finished her ninth quilt:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Xdm8uROP8_0RAygKL76IalvUn40SRm4GNPkbSaI5AAqC-C054POeCBMs-qEwWM0pVVG7FVVXm5vKrzRIu3_lkb8ftb1ET1n9RkuEsA86wEScCt0DkwLzArm34-TKzP8r_gYnKFvJt6Ca/s1600/jmorris_9_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="231" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Xdm8uROP8_0RAygKL76IalvUn40SRm4GNPkbSaI5AAqC-C054POeCBMs-qEwWM0pVVG7FVVXm5vKrzRIu3_lkb8ftb1ET1n9RkuEsA86wEScCt0DkwLzArm34-TKzP8r_gYnKFvJt6Ca/s320/jmorris_9_5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
100% sweatshirts...Gators and Norwegian Elkhounds!<br />
<br />
Jane recently moved to Arizona and I figured this would be her last quilt. Literally hundreds of t-shirts and sweatshirts have been incorporated in her memory quilt. But, wouldn't you know, she called me yesterday and said she came across a few more shirts and she's going to be sending me the makings for quilt #10!<br />
<br />
She lets me choose the colors, she's never in a hurry, and she's always the happiest person. She makes my day and I hope she knows how much I appreciate knowing her. Like I said, the nicest person I've never met. <a href="http://www.wildzipper.com/" target="_blank">Wild Zipper T-Shirt Quilts</a><3 Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12357338881151354390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8066056904170166868.post-11540873859170911632015-07-26T11:48:00.001-07:002015-08-22T11:43:47.670-07:00A really special birthday present for MomKathleen gave me a fun project. Here are a couple photos of the quilt on the longarm machine. You are looking at just a small sampling of the quilt, and with four generations providing shirts and memories, celebrating the birthday of their matriarch.<br />

WELCOME! After 23 years of making exclusively t-shirt quilts, I've ventured out to the world of scrappy, fun, and oh-so creative quilts. With Bonnie Hunter (<a href="http://www.quiltville.com/">www.quiltville.com</a>) as my main source of inspiration, I'm discovering the world of recycling fabric, and clothing beyond t-shirts! Check out her website and blog. You won't be disappointed.</span><br />

<span style="color: #444444;">Quilting never gets old. Every quilt is unique. Every quilt is a work of art. </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #444444;">Recently, I agreed to take on the challenge of creating "as many quilts as possible" from 88 women's blouses, almost all of them handmade over many, many years. Rhoda's mom had recently passed away and the family had fond memories of her love of sewing. I love a challenge! Here are a couple of the completed quilts. </span><br />

<span style="color: #444444;">This is a jelly roll quilt. Check out all those crazy prints! </span><br />

This quilt is a paper-pieced string quilt. Isn't that a great design? Each of the squares uses ONLY cuffs and collars. I try to use every crumb of fabric. I think by the end of this venture I will have six or seven quilts.<br />
